Men, Part II: The Trends

Well summer kind of bailed on us, didn’t it? It’s a bit on the chillier side in the mornings and evenings lately, but at least it’s Friday, and the sun is shining. And, as promised, we are BACK with more in our men’s styling series.

On Tuesday we looked at some great and alternative ideas for  Father’s Day gifts. Today we’re featuring trends for summer 2016. These are some of the styles and looks you can expect to see this season and beyond. There is a lot to take in and talk about, so let’s get started!

Research into the topics that appear on the blog is one of the most fun aspects of blogging, because it really lets us dig into what’s trending, what’s hot, and what is on its way out. A lot of the time we focus on keywords – words or phrases that continually pop up on the various websites and in the magazines we peruse. Chances are if more than a couple of these guides are mentioning something, it’s going to make its way into the salon sooner rather than later, and it’s good to be prepared!.

Some of the keywords we came across preparing this post? Texture, textured quiff, side part, long bob/man bob, buzzcuts and military-esque looks. Whoa. Sounds a bit heavy, no? Well let us break it all down for you!

Texture and the Question of the Quiff

This popped up in more that one style guide, and while texture is a word you’re likely familiar with in regards to hair, the idea of quiff might be a new one to you. Our friends at Fashion Beans define it like this:

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic haircuts of all time, the quiff has been big news since the 1950s. Splicing together elements of the pompadour, 1950s flattop and sometimes even the mohawk, this is a style that’s not afraid to make its (usually voluminous) presence felt.”

That’s the story of the quiff, and adding texture to this iconic style makes us think more “beachy waves”, and less every-hair-in-perfect-place – a lot easier during the heat and humidity of an Ontario summer, that’s for sure.

Taking Sides: The Side Part

A classic style that has been around for a very long time, and it still going strong in the summer of 2016. Lots of ways to change up this look, making this one of the most versatile hairstyles you’ll find, and:

“A low maintenance cut that won’t fall flat throughout the day, the side parting allows you to head straight from your desk to the dancefloor,” says the Ted’s Grooming Room team.

Low maintenance is just what is needed during the summer months. You have things to do and places to go, after all!

Long Hair, Don’t Care

Although the long hair idea might seem like the opposite of what you should do during a heatwave, the trend towards longer locks is definitely one that is on the rise. This may be the start of a backlash against some of the more coiffed styles, as salonmagazine.ca tells us here:

“Because the big hipster barbering trend started to go mainstream last year, we are obviously still going to see quite a bit of these influences in 2016. So, no need to worry! Short, faded barber looks are still going strong for the majority of clients who want the barbershop experience.

However, the trendiest of guys are now moving away from those quintessential looks (the coiff, the pompadour, the flattop) and opting for longer locks instead. In Europe, where most of men’s cutting-edge hairstyling trends tend to originate, “Hair is longer and softer, flatter and away from the face,” says Terry Ritcey, director of education for Redken Canada.”

What’s the Buzz?

Finally, truly the easiest hairstyle to rock and maintain all summer long is the military-style buzzcut. True, it’s not for the faint of heart, it’s a pretty big commitment! But, if you’re willing to take the plunge with the clippers, the buzzcut is not only a convenient choice for summer, it’s also one that is completely on trend:

“Expect a super short haircut for SS16, hence the name ‘military-esque’. With this style it’s about keeping it really tight at the back and sides and a crop on top. It’s a style that has over the years stood the test of time, it’s simple and easy to style.”

If you DO decide to take the plunge and make a big change, be sure to join us back here on Tuesday. We will be taking a look at styling tips as well as some hot Aveda products you can use to ensure your coiff is looking – and behaving – its absolute best!

Thanks for reading, and happy weekend everyone!
