We are back for our Tuesday post, the first Tuesday of the new month – Earth Month! We introduced the concept on Friday (when it was still March) and for the next few posts we are going to be pointing you towards some of the ways you can help, some of the things Aveda and Willow are doing to celebrate the month, and raise awareness to a variety of causes and ventures.
The cause that is nearest and dearest to the hearts of everyone at Aveda is water.
For us, where we live, access to water is relatively easy. Clean water pours out of our taps whenever we need it, whenever we want it. In honour of women around the world who don’t have easy access to water, Aveda has created a video that helps illustrate the lengths women in other parts of the world have to go to in order to provide fresh water for their families each day. According to the Collega Earth Month website:
“WOMEN IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA SPEND AN ESTIMATED 40 BILLION HOURS PER YEAR COLLECTING WATER – EQUIVALENT TO A YEAR’S WORTH OF LABOUR BY THE ENTIRE WORKFORCE IN FRANCE (UNECA.ORG).
The amount of time spent collecting water takes women away from family and community.”
Water sources that are closer, more accessible, and sustainable in the long term, would give women and girls more time for other opportunities like education, jobs and career development, and business ventures. When a large portion of your day is eaten up by an hour’s walk to and from the closest water source, and that walk must often be taken more than once a day, there is little time for much else.
Aveda and WaterAid want to change that, and you can help! Visit the website to find out how to donate, where to find fundraising events, and more. And definitely stick around on the blog as we give you details in future blog posts about Willow’s contribution to the Earth Month cause as well. As always, the Willow team will be walking for water, and there will be a few things happening in the salon as well, so stay tuned for those.
Thanks for reading, friends. Enjoy the week, we’ll be back here to chat at you on Friday!
