We’re back for another Tuesday post, and today we are asking the age old question: can a new lipstick change your world?
We’ve all been there. We’re in a bit of a mood, maybe feeling a little down in the dumps for whatever reason, and we find ourselves wandering the aisles of Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart, or the makeup station at Willow, thinking “You know what would make me feel better? A new lipstick.”
Or maybe for you it’s not a new lipstick, but a new nail polish. Or hair accessory. Or a new bracelet, or some other piece of inexpensive jewelry. We’re not talking about breaking the bank, or making a massive investment, not at all! We’re talking a little purchase that can perk us up a bit, make us happy, give us a new perspective.
It’s a lot to ask of a purchase you can fit in your pocket or purse, and to be honest, most of us know it’s only a temporary fix, don’t we? Of course we do. Because that age old question? Does have an answer, and the answer is no. No, a new lipstick cannot change your world, BUT what it can do is make you smile, and, as we said above, even give you a new perspective on your situation. And perhaps it’s no coincidence that when we’re down we look for something colourful – like a lipstick – because colour can definitely have an effect on our mood.
Much ink has been spilled about the psychology of colour. Which colours can enhance moods, and which will bring you down; what colours are peaceful and belong in bedrooms, and which colours to avoid for dining rooms, etc. There is a LOT of information, and much of it relates to branding – corporate and otherwise – and we know companies spend a lot of time trying to come up with the best colour scheme for their product or service. Think about Aveda, for example, and Willow. Colour palettes and tones and combinations of colours don’t just happen by accident. An awful lot of thought goes into what works well, what potential customers and clients will be drawn to, and what best represents the company and its values.
Colour, in a nutshell, speaks volumes. And so it’s no wonder that when we’re feeling blue (colour as emotion) or seeing red (again, colour as emotion) we may be drawn to something colourful to help us find a better frame of mind.
This article from Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics gives us the best mood-enhancing colours for lipsticks in several colour categories: red, orange, pink, purple, blue, and brown. Of course there are thousands of variations of each of those, but this little article breaks down for us what these colours represent – or are perceived to represent – and gives us the guidelines for when to bust out the bright orange, and when to maybe tone it down with something brown.
It’s a fascinating concept, matching your makeup to your mood – or perhaps to the mood you want. And so in that vein, let’s take a look at the best of these most popular mood-enhancing shades for the 2017 season!
Let’s start with orange, the colour of summer popsicles! Real Simple magazine gives us 6 Shade-of-the-Summer Orange Lipsticks. Orange, according to the Youngblood article, is associated with our gut instincts, and offers emotional strength. Feeling torn, having a hard time making decisions? Orange is your friend.
Now let’s take a look at a classic – red. Red is energy, red is passion, so if you’re finding yourself in desperate need of either of those things, red is probably what you need. Take a look at Vogue’s 10 Best Red Lipsticks to find your favourite.
Purple is another strong, strong colour, and it’s not always one people think of when they think lipstick, but purple is magical! It’s calming, and it also represents creativity, making it perfect for a day you could use a little grounding. Makeup.com gives us Five Reasons Not to be Afraid of Purple Lipstick and then lists their top ten, so how can you go wrong?
And, if those options don’t do the trick, there are a whoooole lot of articles that devote themselves to the colours of the season, and there’s bound to be a few in those that are mood lifters for you! Leave it to Cosmopolitan, Fashionisers, and PureWow to give us the lowdown on what’s on trend for Summer 2017.
So there you go! A new lipstick might not change your entire world, but since the right colour can help you to feel happy, energetic, or calm, we say go for it!
Enjoy the week, friends! Chat with you again on Friday.
