Happy Friday, friends! Did you feel that sudden WHOOSH in the air on Wednesday? Within hours of Halloween ending, we were full-on into the next big holiday season. So long pumpkin spice, make way for peppermint and gingerbread! It happens literally overnight! Ah, well if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Or so they say.
But before we can get fully into the next big thing, we have to remember something special this weekend. That’s right – Daylight Savings Time is ending, and we are required to set our clocks back one hour. Spring ahead, fall back. At least with the fall direction for the clocks, we get an extra hour – which is great! That whole spring ahead thing can really mess us up. Losing that hour is no fun. But gaining one? Well, that’s a whole other story!
Now, normally the clocks go back really late at night. Or early in the morning is probably more accurate. And unless you’re working a night shift or you are a seriously committed partier – or maybe you have a newborn baby – there’s a good chance you’ll miss that tacked on hour altogether. Which is kind of too bad! There is the extra hour of sleep that you’ll get Sunday morning, but even that doesn’t always work out, if your body is well-rested you might just find you’re getting up at the usual time, but it’s an hour before the usual time and…well sure, it’s a bit confusing. In fact, who even knows why we still do Daylight Savings Time!
But again, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Right? So why not at least make plans to use that extra hour, instead of just accepting it for what it is. We’ve all said at least once in our lives “I just need another hour in the day!” Well, now we have one! So let’s take a look at some ideas.
Creating My Happiness gives us a list with quite a range of options in their 50 Things To Do With An Extra Hour, and BBC Radio 4 gets on board with some suggestions for 14 Things To Do With An Extra Hour. Number 1: Sleep. We can totally get behind that, but we also like the “Cook a breakfast bonanza” idea as well. Hmmm….decisions, decisions…
Even Inc. magazine has a list for us – decidedly more business-oriented, but still some fun stuff (Plan the perfect dinner party! Call an old friend!) along with the practical, work-related ideas (Catch up on email, Investigate two of your competitors, etc.)
Inspired? Let us know what you’re planning to do with that extra hour! And, for those who are curious about the whole Daylight Savings Time thing – where did it come from, why do we do it – this video from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has a pretty hilarious take on the whole DST thing:
Have a great weekend, everyone! See you back here Tuesday – hopefully, nice and rested!
